Who is the Course Suitable for?Delegates must be at least 16 years of age and be in possession of Medical First Aid on Board Ship certification. If the delegate is to be a Master or have the primary control of the Medical care onboard a UK flagged ship this training must have be gained within the last 5 years.

This MCA approved training is intended for seafarers who are designated to take charge of medical care on board ship, in accordance with Regulation VI/4 of the annex to the STCW Convention and Section A-VI/4 (4-6) of the STCW code, and the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) regulations 1997].

Prerequisites

Delegates must be at least 16 years of age and be in possession of Medical First Aid on Board Ship certification. If the delegate is to be a Master or have the primary control of the Medical care onboard a UK flagged ship this training must have be gained within the last 5 years.

​Objective

The training is delivered in modular form to instill knowledge and skills required to take charge of medical care on board ship. Each module is delivered in both theoretical and practical method with continual assessment of the delegate, and by final assessments undertaken by external examiners based on the required learning objectives for each module.

​Contents

Delegates will undertake practical and theoretical training in the following elements:

  • Communications
  • Making a diagnosis
  • The cardio vascular and respiratory systems
  • The abdomen
  • ENT, dental and ophthalmic
  • Communicable diseases
  • Wounds and injuries
  • Medication
  • Equipment and information
  • Patient management – general
  • Patient management – specific

​Exam 

Candidates satisfying the criteria and demonstrating competence on-course will be issued with certificates complying with the STCW95 Code. Refresher training is only required if the candidate is to be a Master or have the primary control of the Medical care onboard a UK flagged ship.
