This course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for all those who go afloat, on inland waters or up to 60 miles offshore. The syllabus is based on the recommendations of the HSE and the MCA.

Certification:

Subject to the student successfully completely the course to the required standards a certificate will be issued and it is valid for 3 years. The certificate fulfils the requirements for: The MCA Code of Practice for skippers of small commercial vessels up to category 2, including boat masters

Course Certifying Body: Royal Yachting Association

Validity: 3 years

COURSE CONTENT:

  • First aid principles and how to get medical advice or assistance by radio.
  • Casualty recovery and rescue/preparing to evacuate by helicopter.
  • Casualty assessment, recovery position and modifications in restricted spaces.
  • control of bleeding, bandaging and dressings
  • Management of shock in relation to internal and external bleeding.
  • Treatment of cold shock, hypothermia following immersion and/or exposure.
  • Understand the differential of drowning.
  • Recognise the signs of a reduced level of response, with particular reference to serious head injury
  • Be aware of the general treatment for: breathing difficulties, chest pain, seasickness, diabetic emergency, anaphylaxis, hypothermia, fractures, burns
